The Fifth Super Friendship Club Pageant - YOU

Postby Ian Snyder » Sun Apr 01, 2012 12:23 pm

Make a game about YOU. Make something personal. Feel free to work in groups if you want.

The game needn't be autobiographical, and it needn't be a game. "You" can refer to you, or to me, or to anyone else. "You" might be the place you grew up, or someone dear to you, or a total stranger.

This pageant begins April 1 and ends May 1.

If you haven't made games before, and aren't sure where to start, just ask: there are plenty of people here who can give guidance.

When you decide to post about your game, say it's called "Cats Under Fire", post a thread about it with the title "You Pageant - Cats Under Fire". If you've finished it, edit the first post to give it a new title - something like "You Pageant - Cats Under Fire [ DONE ]".

If you've any questions, please just ask below :)

I liked this theme enough to finally register an account here.

Hopefully I'll be able to make a game that only I could have made.

I'm excited for this. My life has been pretty interesting, despite my young age, so I think I could weave a bit of a story if I tried.

Is it OK if I've been working on the game for a month already? It does kinda fit the theme :)

I must say this pageant is truly interesting. One of the (I think) best advice I've been given is not to put everything I am into a game, only part of it, because of the dangers of solipsism. Seeing how closely knit the theme is with the developer him/herself, a lot of interesting games are bound to be created!

I'll be watching very closely :D

May as well call this one done. Good job on finishing, Toaster.

If I may ask everyone at large, is there a particular reason for the lesser participation? Is it a natural consequence of this site's age, or does it arise from some element of the site we can improve? Was it just a bad theme?

I'd like to know too. I like the theme, the only reason I didn't take part is that I can't really spare a month out to work on something these days :(

The site is pretty quiet these days.

I did really like this theme. I'd like to say that my own lack of participation was because of Ludum Dare, but I'm not sure if that was entirely the case or if a 1 month game jam is just too much of a time commitment for me. After all I haven't managed to do anything for the previous jams either.

This is more of a hypothetical but I could see how this particular theme could put people off. I know while I was thinking about some ideas I put most of them aside because I would feel too vulnerable if I gave people a really personal game to play :( I think people tend to shy away from exposing themselves like that.

I feel bad I wasn't able to take part in this one. I thought the theme was good, and I had a title (Things I am Afraid of) and an idea of what the game would be about (...things I am afraid of). I had no concrete gameplay ideas though, and I had no time last month to actually do anything with it.

The site has gotten a lot quieter lately; I'm hoping it's just a lull. I think the pageants are the best way to attract people to the forum, and I wonder if it would be possible to make a bigger deal of the next pageant? Maybe publicise it more, or have some kind of spin on the theme that would really grab people's attention.

I'm disappointed there aren't more entries, too. I was going to make a game adaptation of a dream I had about my dad, but halfway through the month I had a bad experience with my dad that put me off working on the game. Now I plan to make a comic about the bad experience, after which I'll hopefully be able to get back to the game again. Expect to see them both here if I can finish them.

Your theme was my favourite of the ones offered on the site so far. Rest assured knowing it's inspired me to experiment with making a lot of my work more personal, which I think demonstrates more influence than a single game for the pageant anyway!

What if we shortened the pageants to maybe something like two weeks? I get the feeling that committing a month to a game feels like a lot, but two weeks is just enough time to make something fairly complete without it taking over the rest of your work

Thoughts?

I have to say I really liked thinking about this month's theme a lot, but I have been very busy with school this past month with it wrapping up. I also think the idea of shortening the length of the pageants to two weeks would be a nice experiment and would kind of force people to think smaller in scope which may allow them to finish their games on time.
