Ritual Pageant - ⊙ [DONE?]

Postby WBojangles » Sun Aug 12, 2012 7:50 pm

.
I want to create something that will take some dedication.
I want to create a game that will require your dedication, in the form of a ritual.

⊙ is the astronomical symbol of the sun. You can pronounce it The Sun, Sol, Солнце, or, however else you want to. This is because you will be creating your own solar system, and your own universe.

Whenever you think to, be it completely randomly, every hour, or every day, you will skim some provided text, and select a string of words to copy and paste into your blueprint. Your blueprint will look like a mess, but its contents should at least pertain to your interests. You can edit the document however you see fit.

After you have collected a massive amount of text over some span of time, the game will generate your universe based on the content. It should, at least in some vague manner, reflect you. The universe will serve no purpose other than existing, for you to look at.

This is the last pageant. I didn't have any game ideas until today. I only have 2 days open to work on it and get it in for the deadline, but I'll work on this after if I don't finish in time. This game might not be fun. I hope it at least turns out to be an interesting experiment.

Alrighty, that about does it. You can download the source code now; refer to my post down that way.

Not going to finish within the next hour, not a huge surprise.

Almost done with the reading part, after that I'll hack up a generator thing.

I hope you finish it, because it sounds very cool.

Thanks for the nudge, I almost put off coding altogether for today! Which means I would have put it off indefinitely.

Woah, text and highlighting??
Yeah. Text and highlighting. You can click that text. With your mouse cursor.

Well, at least I feel some sense of accomplishment. ONWARD

Curious about where you'll end up with this. Intriguing

Okay, the writing mode is completely done. That thing is airtight. Well, airtight enough anyway. I would say it is at Ziploc level at least, not necessarily foolproof or all too neat, but it gets the job done.
Speaking of getting jobs done, up next and last is the actual content generator, the monster that will give this game any point at all. I only have a rough idea of how I want to parse through all the text and how I want it to translate to your universe. But actually, if at all possible, I'd like to keep it that way. Each universe should be distinct enough to where even I can't tell if the generator has gone awry. Basically anything goes, as long as it doesn't crash.

I made code that does some things! ⊙ is done enough. As a farewell to the forums, it includes every pageant theme in some respect.

The project itself is really as uninteresting as I feared. But, this being the last pageant, I didn't want to let myself down. So I finished up the code to my best ability. The end result is ridiculously buggy, and it all doesn't seem to want to work right for some reason I can't determine.

I couldn't let anyone trudge through the ~100something texts, only to be let down by what is currently showing up, mostly empty space. But, I wanted to provide something, despite having no more time to work on this because of life [aka work and PAX]. What I decided to do is give you the source code. You can do whatever you want with it, as long as you don't call it your own I suppose [not that I worry for my reputation, this would only be damaging yours]. See how I formatted text, learn how to use SFML, point and laugh, etc.

As for my time on this forum, I want to say that I had a lot of fun pitching in a comment when I could, despite not being around a whole lot. The community here is full of some of the most genuinely nice people, and some fantastic developers. I found out about many of you through this site and I hope I run into your work in the future. Looking back on my own work, I'm glad I tried and had fun. But I also hope I am never a project lead.

I justify this source-only release with my interpretation of the spirit of this forum - get inspired to make things, try it out, and show everyone your progress. It doesn't have to be good, it doesn't even have to be a game. Just make something.

So here you are: I present, something.
Thanks everyone, and good luck making more of those video games.

I am getting a webpage not available message, but that might be due in part to my slow internet.

Seems to be working for me. Can anyone confirm that it does or doesn't work?
