Hi guys,

I write music too and I work with PXTone. I started publishing tracks months ago, and I 'm planning to release a free downloadable album as soon as I make enough tracks. Today I just released the 7th, named Rain Industry, which you can find here with all the other tracks: http://www.alexcamilleri.com/music

A lot of great tracks in this thread, and I really appreciated yoshimitsu ones!

Hi there! I'm a musician too, though my first attempt at music for a game is actually in progress- it's for Darien's pageant entry so I'm not going to spoil it yet. I sing and play the piano and am learning guitar, and I've done a ton of composition but it's mostly been stuff for my church choir so far. I'm really excited about branching out.

What software would you guys recommend for someone who doesn't want to spend a ton of money on a hobby that might fizzle? For the current project I'm using MuseScore, which is okay for what I'm doing but is really designed more for printed sheet and is lacking in its MIDI playback capabilities.

Just for fun, here's an arrangement of "Send In the Clowns" I did for school back in December. I'm on vocals and piano. Note that it was recorded on an iPhone from the audience, so the quality's not amazing. Maybe someday Darien will write a game I can put that in. You know, once Sondheim's out of copyright.

Thanks for the comments on my music, now that I know people like it I'm gonna get more into the whole computer music thing.

@Noah - Nice tunes! I like the chiptune especially. Reminds me of those games where it's 20XX and the city is going down in flames and you must save the world and.. basically megaman.

@keenblaze - cool metal stuff! that melodic kind of metal is in my opinion the best metal (do you know August Burns Red?) and is also the type of metal I want to make.

@Ama - Nice song :) you have a very good singing voice

@yoshimitsu Thanks! Yeah, I know this band, they make good stuff :) But I prefer something like As I Lay Dying or Diablo from melodic metal.

Also I agree with @mcc that indie games need soundtracks like "loop with chiptune and electric guitar". For example, Super Meat Boy soundtrack is the best for me.

I write a lot of music of various kinds. A very small fraction of my work is here.

Sadly, I don't have enough time right at this moment to listen to everyone's music, but I really want to do that, so I'll be back later this week with some comments.

Great stuff in this thread, cheers for sharing!

Music's just a side hobby for me as well. I've released a few albums on Jamendo. My style has been leaning more towards rock/punk/etc., with some electronic stuff thrown in... I love blending some 8-bit sounds with the energy and sincerity of the music I usually want to write. Here's the link to perhaps the most relevant track off of the recent album, 'Rivery City Handsome' http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/815951 . However, I'm looking forward to making some music for any future game projects of mine, to try some more soundscape-ish kinds of things. I've mostly been working with SONAR in recent history.

Love to hear more tracks, cheers!

I make music!
Badly. XD
One thing I like to make myself for games is the music, no matter how bad, I prefer if it's mine.

You can find a couple of old MCK NES tunes here: 8bc. I have been working on more (using LSDJ now too) but I never satisfy myself even to the degree where it's not embarrassing to post. >.<

I also play dichromatic accordion, mostly for traditional Irish stuff. Thankfully I have never been recorded.

Some really cool stuff in this thread.

I've been writing music on the side for probably 10 or 11 years now. I started out with trackers, but now I do everything in Reason+Record, which is about a zillion times more enjoyable. I tend toward dramatic electronic sounds, influenced by trance music and film scores. I have a prospective album in the works and I often score my own games as well, which is sometimes more fun than designing them. ;)

Some stuff:

Micro.Bit theme - From Micro.Bit. This was kinda fun since it was my first attempt at some chiptune elements.

TRI theme - From TRI. Lush, dramatic electronica, wholly unsuited to the super-pedestrian graphics in that game. ~cough~ priorities. :P

Anomaly - From Bloxx. A driving electronic beat for a puzzle game, because... yeah, I don't know why.

Wowzers! back when I was collecting records I think I bought a few of yours! That is super cool.

I have found myself with less and less time to make music recently, making games consumes all, but before I really threw myself into it I made a ton of stuff: http://jonbro.tk/music.html

I mostly wrote with trackers, but I played drums and sang occasionally. My favorite trackers were LSDJ, LGPT, and Buzz. I also played in bands ( http://www.theamazingrolo.net/music/handface/ and others that I don't have web pages about). Most recently I was writing software in max/msp to use for performance.

I think that I have found it easier to be good at writing games then writing music, or at least stand out from the crowd and be appreciated. That might just be my own neurosis though.

I trying to make music, it is rather difficult, sound design is much more easier.
At the moment I have not released a game with my own music (only ambient pads)
Here's my efforts at making music:

Music1
Song Of The Dead Whales
Sorry, Chopin
Smooth(bad, bad quality)

Song Of The Dead Whales

Oh, I liked this a lot.

I wonder what this would be like with some more intense bass on the drum hits. (Or maybe there is already some and the compression + my speakers murdered them).

This is fault of my bad mastering of this track, I think. I should remake this song for use in the game.

I've played guitar and piano for a long time, started to delve into electronics and computer based production around just over a year ago so I haven't made a lot, I'm still learning in many ways. I'm hoping to get an Akai MPC26 soon.

As of the 22nd of this month I'll be an audio engineering student too, which is cool.

I've been playing music ever since I was taught jungle rhythms by an Argentinian shaman as a child (no, for reals). Started playing guitar 15+ years ago now, been composing for orchestrata's for 10+, rapping for ten as well. I play most instruments. lately I've been doing mostly trippy fractal digitally generated music, I love the math of it, so beautiful, I love how i can use one fractal to generate both L system trees and crazy beats. Here is a track which combines the fractals with the guitars

http://soundcloud.com/p0ss/time-fractal-digital-rainy

I've done quite a few sound tracks for short films and games, thing is though, my music is now diverging into a place which doesn't agree with many people's sensibilities. I love random, I bathe in feedback and layer disharmonies and discordance. Not many games suit that kind of "post-authenticism" (Since its not authentic and post modernism is dead http://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/2011/07/postmodernism-is-dead-va-exhibition-age-of-authenticism/). Mind you, maybe this fractal remix album i'm working on will work all the randomvibe out and snap me into authenticismland and I can get into wearing cowl necked hoodies and being too hipster for milan.

Super pop for super friends! http://soundcloud.com/p0ss/cuddle-puzzle-good
